Dominic has been involved in the air particle abrasion (APA) field for nearly two decades. Now there are so many products it can be a bit overwhelming.

This video discusses which products to use according to your budget.

Why use Air Particle Abrasion?

APA is an essential protocol in the Bioclear composite method, fissure sealants and indirect restorations (veneers/crowns).

What does APA do?

Particle abrasion blasts away rubbish like jet washing a patio or car. Using APA has shown higher bond strengths in direct and indirect restorations; it is a crucial part of bonding process.

Air Abrasion Units and Types of Particles

Prestige Dental

It is a simple, budget entry level APA unit, and fits on your air line. If you need a chair coupling you can order this from Prestige. Particles used: aluminium oxide 50 microns – must be used dry.

Bioclear Blaster

A more expensive product that uses aluminium trioxide particles and must be used wet is the Bioclear Matrix Blaster.

AquaCare

More complex but more versatile air abrasion and air polishing unit. You click in the pod of the material you want to put on (e.g. aluminium oxide for particle abrasion) and get to work. There is a sync particle that you can use for dentine sensitivity. The third pod holds sodium bicarbonate – which undertakes air polishing for you too. See product details. You can also adjust the pressure on this machine for different levels of caries removal. It can clear the peripheral caries we can have confidence to bond while leaving deeper caries for an indirect pulp capping procedure.
